I read in the Louisville Courier-Journal, this morning, that the Brasstown
festivities on New Year's Eve was forced to replace the live possum that they
planned on lowering. After threats from PETA, they replaced the live possum
with roadkill.

Hey, there's a town in Spain that throws a live goat out of the church
belfry once every year. No, the goat does not live to tell the tale.
That is, until a few years ago, when Spanish animal rights groups forced
them to lower it down with a rope. The goat throw started 150 years or
so ago when, during a famine, the town priest locked the last goat in
town in the belfry to prevent it from being eaten. The outraged citizens
stormed the church and tossed out the goat.
