I noticed that two reference works are missing from this discussion, so
here goes:

1) Monitoring Times (monthly magazine,
www.monitoringtimes.com) -- each
month they publish about 20 pages of information about who is
broadcasting on what frequencies throughout the day; and

2) Passport to World Band Radio (book, published annually,
www.passband.com) -- contains detailed information about each
broadcaster, including web, mailing and email addresses (useful for
QSLing), plus the "Blue Pages" in the back, organized by frequency and
time of day, so you can look up the frequency and then see who's using
that frequency at that particular time.

These two are THE most essential tools in my shack for shortwave
listening.
