I just bought Grundig's new YB550PE from Universal Radio for the nice price of only $100 (ex. shipping) and got it shipped to me in just two days. I plan on using this thing for casual AM/FM listening and some on-the-go DXing (camping, on a train/bus trip, etc.) and it's been just the thing for that purpose. Now I've got my sights on something to replace my old Realistic DX440 which I did my 'big stuff' with and that looks to be either a Grundig Satellit 800, a Sony ICF-SW77, or a Yaesu FRG-100B. Which one of those would be the best buy? Jeff Louisville, KY I have the Satellit 800 and can tell you it is a great receiver. The sync detector (sideband selectable) is flawless, the AGC fast/slow is great, and the 3 bandwidths are also great. And having both bass and treble controls not only tailors the sound, but helps to eliminate or reduce certain types of interference. IF you are looking for a set with above average sound and lots of features, the Satellit 800 has it. IF you can wait a few months, the Eton E1 XM should be available (what was going to be the Satellit 900) which will also have the features of the Satellit 800 PLUS passband tuning, all for around $560. Designed with the help of R. L. Drake, from what I've seen, the Eton E1 XM will be a set between the Drake SW8 and the Drake R8B, but will be a portable. In addition, it will also be ready for both Satellite Radio and Digital Broadcasts. More information is at Eton's website at: www.eton.com |
