The odds of finding one now are about nil. If they do have one, it's
almost certainly a returned one.

There was one in a Cinti store not more than a month ago. Don't know if it was
returned or not, looked spotless, and box was in pristine shape FWIW.

Dear Parker

The radio shack still might sell a radio called DX 398 which is a
great radio. It's just a relabeled Sangean ATS-909. I have one and
last night I was listening to Radio Conakry (Guinea), Africa #1 in
Gabon with about a 50' piece of radio shack wire outside.

.....

I love Africa # 1. It comes in loud and clear during the afternoon
here in northern Virginia. I listen with a DX-399 or DX-392 using just
the whip. Motown with commentary in French: what a combo.

http://www.africa1.com/

Now that it's too late for the OP, here's the list of discontinued
radios at Radio Shack.

These are the prices off the RS Computer as of 2pm Central time
today, Oct. 29, 2002:

DX-396 is at $29.97 20-226 equivalent to Sangean ATS-xxx
DX-397 is at $19.97 20-227 " Sangean ATS-xxx
DX-398 is at $99.97 20-228 " Sangean ATS-909
DX-399 is at $39.97 20-229 " Sangean ATS-606 or Siemens RK-759
DX-402 is at $69.97* 20-230 " Sangean ATS-505

* As of late November, the DX-402 is $49.97.

And for those AM DXers out there, the word I have is that the AM loop
antenna (15-1853/1501853) is discontinued. It is no longer available
through the website, and can be found only in the stores until all
gone. Current price on this antenna is $19.99. [It's lower now, if you
can find one].

----SNIP----

radios at Radio Shack.
These are the prices off the RS Computer as of 2pm Central time
today, Oct. 29, 2002:
DX-396 is at $29.97 20-226 equivalent to Sangean ATS-xxx
----SNIP----

The DX-396, according to Radio Netherlands review at,
http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/ , is a Sangean model, but nobody has yet been
able to find a Sangean branded equivallent, ATS-XXX or otherwise. It
discontinued at Radio Shack at $29.97. Any time you see a Radio Shack price
tag ending in $.97 (97 cents), you know the item is definitely discontinued
and that is a blow-out price. The price may continually drop, still showing
a $.97 ending, until gone. The last DX-396 probably disappeared from the
last Radio Shack store some time back in the early summer of 2003 at the
latest. I bought the last one available in the Atlanta area, and regretted
that I was not able to get at least two, one to use, and one to hold back
for when the one in service might die beyond any possibility of repair. I
might even have liked to get more than two, so I could have some for sale or
trade later.

DX-397 is at $19.97 20-227 " Sangean ATS-xxx
The DX-397 was discontinued at $19.97. It is the same radio as the Sangean
SG-622, which I understand is still available at a number of Sangean
dealers, such as Universal Radio, among others. I have not heard whether
that one is discontinued. I think there might be a brief review of that one
at the Radio Netherlands website. It can actually fit, and even be operated
somewhat inconveniently from, a large shirt pocket, but better for a coat or
jacket pocket. I was not impressed with it very much at all, and figured I
did not get robbed for $19.97, but I wished I had not spent the money. Ten
more bucks might have gotten me a really good small portable radio, another
DX-396.

DX-398 is at $99.97 20-228 " Sangean ATS-909
DX-399 is at $39.97 20-229 " Sangean ATS-606 or Siemens RK-759
DX-402 is at $69.97* 20-230 " Sangean ATS-505
* As of late November, the DX-402 is $49.97.

I also bought a DX-402 and liked that radio quite a bit. I can't say
exactly why, but I actually like the ATS-505 better than the ATS-909, and I
deliberately chose not to buy a DX-398. If any of those Sangean-made DX-NNN
radios are still available anywhere at all, you might be able to find a
DX-402 or maybe a DX-399 at some out-of-the-way Radio Shack store somewhere.
I think I remember seeing or hearing of a DX-402 still existing unsold in
one of the Atlanta area stores as late as October, last year, 2003.

And for those AM DXers out there, the word I have is that the AM
loop antenna (15-1853/1501853) is discontinued. It is no longer
available through the website, and can be found only in the stores
until all gone. Current price on this antenna is $19.99. [It's
lower now, if you can find one].
The last two of those loops available in the Atlanta area, one of them
without its box and without the supplied connector cable, came to my place
at $9.97 each. I would suspect all those are now sold and accounted for
somewhere for. I have three of them, and might at some future date let one
of them go as part of some sale or trade, maybe.
The thing that surprises me is that Radio Shack stores in the USA have as
yet chosen not to sell or offer for sale by mail order, the Grundig S-350.
I rather think they could sell them by the boatload if they wanted to, and
I'm not talking about a small boat, either. The last time I was in a Radio
Shack store, the only two Grundig-brand shortwave-capable radios they had
were the FR-200 emergency crank-powered radio, the YB-400PE, and some
smaller model, possibly the Mini World 100, or one of the small Traveller
models.

Totally from memory (too tired to look it up on Google Groups), the DX-375
and DX-396 (is that right?) were - in all liklihood Grundig or Grundig
designs - they had the only radios during that time that were powered by
2 x "C" cells. (The reason everybody uses rechargeables instead of a wallwart
or even alkalines - they last forever.)

No. SW is a "specialty" item; I'm surprised that RS has any shortwave radios
at all - or more than one model anyway. And - to the best of my knowledge -
RadioShack has /never/ discounted any of the in-stock Grundigs.

and
I'm not talking about a small boat, either. The last time I was in a Radio

From watching the ads lately, RadioShack is sliding into a position as the
"babyboomers' store". Tv? We'll supply it. Health-related goods? We'll supply
it.

Watch for oxygen masks and more "health" items coming to a RadioShack in your
vicinity.

Look out for Cell-Phones with volume control and "clear-speech".

[snip]

Of all the models mentioned, I bought a DX-398 and a DX-399 in
November 2002. I refer to my DX-399 as the "Pocket Hercules," in honor
of the Turkish weightlifter of slight build who participates in the
Olympics. (The wrestler's name is Naim Suleymanoglu. Google has
134,000 hits for "pocket hercules".) It's such a tiny affair, but it
does so much. I think it would be the perfect radio to take on, say, a
bicycling or backpacking tour of Europe, especially because it was
sold with a power adapter that could operate at both 110 and 220
volts. You wouldn't need SSB for a venture like that; you'd just want
to hear some tunes wherever you happened to be.

I did look at the DX-396. I took it up to the front of the store and
tuned in Radio Exterior de España, a station that comes blasting off
the ionosphere at 15110 around 3 p.m. on the East Coast of the US.
With all the other RS radios I had just bought, though, I couldn't
justify buying one more. (Please don't throw me off the list for
saying that.) No matter; someone else bought it quickly enough.

I also looked at the DX-402. The tuning knob seemed sort of cheesy,
but that issue was nothing a little contact couldn't take care of. My
brother bought one of those.

They were great bargains all. I shake my head thinking of the mistake
RS made when it discontinued its line of SWRs.

PRAY they have a dsicontinued DX 398 ($100) or DX 399 ($39) left

I urge you instead to go to the internet and shop

Rat Shack is a dominion of the damned.

Look at Grundig S 350 and various Sangean or perhaps some reviewed on
radiointel.com would appeal to you.[eg Degen, Kaito, etc]

many good radios for $100 , some with digital and SSB

DONT buy in haste, buy after doing your homework

Also,I live in a house, and get do whatever when it comes to an

I am getting about 25 spam mails a day telling me how to increase my
penis size.
Maybe I should spend the $200 on that.(kidding)

It's after 12 noon eastern time.
Did Parker read the replies, or is he at this moment
being asked if he's interested in a cell phone or satellite TV, by
the same guy who just said
"Um... I think we have shortwave radios,
let me check in back."
