I've ordered a few things from them and had good luck.

My impression is phone orders get processed faster than on line ones.

All Electronics is another outfit that seems to process phone orders faster than internet ones.

I've had the same experience with them, they did say when I phoned them
to chase an online order that they always had a LARGE amount of on line
orders. I was also quoted 30 days but the kit has always arrived much
quicker than that, even taking into account customs at this end.

I always had good service from them over the years. No complaints. I bought
a Sony SW 100 off their used equipment site once for about $180 and it was
spotless.
So they are good company from my experiences.

My telephone introduction is, "I'd like to get a price on an item but only
if you have it in stock and can ship it immediately". That filters the
just-in-time philosophy out of the ordering process.

I ordered some filters for an Icom 706 from them last summer.
Prompt, courteous service, only one filter backordered, and it shipped
exactly when they said it would (earlier, come to think of it).

I'd say deal with them with confidence. I've never had a problem,
anyway.

I e-mailed them about a used item, also listing some equipment that I
was thinking of selling/trading.

It took them over a week to reply that the (used) item was sold and
never mentioned the equipment I wanted to sell/trade.

Very lax on their part.

I also did a phone inquiry on a used item and after being put on hold
for a while, the lady? said it was sold.

I am not very thrilled about my contacts with them.

I've had similar experiences. You are told the product is in stock
until the order is completed, then they tell you the item is
backordered.

I did want to test a Ten-Tec RX-340 there, and when the lady who
answered the phone asked someone else if I could test the radio, she
was told, "hell no, that's a $4000 radio."

So I drove to Ten-Tec and was given free-reign to play with the radio.
I bought one, from Ten-Tec, two months later.

All that said, Universal is kinda the lesser of two evils in the
shortwave supply biz. I look elsewhere when I can, such as Ham Radio
Outlet or one of the myriad national mail-order scanner shops.

I've had mixed results with Universal Radio - one order went well and
another didn't. I've had slightly better results with Burghardt
(www.burghardt-amateur.com) and their prices are often better. However,
since you added a shortwave newsgroup to your message, I should point out
that their primary focus is on Amateur Radio, with very little shortwave
equipment.

I've ordered from them before and never had
any delivery problems.

Backorders are usually a function of the leadtime
from the manufacturer (all of them are in Asia)
and not the dealer. This issue cannot be helped.
It's the nature of supply vs demand.

Of late however, I've been ordering from
Texas Towers http://www.texastowers.com/
for ham related items and also Grove Enterprises
http://www.grove-ent.com/ for SWL items.

Both of these Dealers above were able to get me
a better price on a given item in several cases of
purchase over the quoted price from U.R.

I've had less than pleasant experiences with Universal. The staff seems
almost surly and almost equally unfamiliar with the equipment they sell.
Prices are higher, by quite a margin, over other dealers. My personal
preference is R&L Electronics in Hamilton, Ohio, just north of

They seem to be more interested in collecting pictures of various customers'

lucky to have gotten this impression before I ordered from them, thus saving
me from any ensuing hassles.

And I'll agree about CCrane. I had a problem with an used radio I bought from
them (and the problem was not very great) and they went so far out of their
way to make sure I was satisfied that it embarassed me!

I tried to talk them into taking some money ($25?) and they just wouldn't let
me give it to them.

If CCrane has something I want, I'll buy it from them without comparison
shopping - I could care less if they charge more; I don't mind paying for
quality.

And just wait 'til I tell y'all about their battery charger!

Thanks to their horrible service, I've gone elsewhere and always saved

They've also got a thing for that young lady with the short dress and high

been in every single catalog I've received (for years). Universal says
they've been in business since 1942 and I have to wonder at this point if
that same photograph has been in the catalog throughout all that time.
Indeed, that "young woman" could be 70-80 years old today. However, the
dress, hair style, and style of high heels, suggests the picture was taken
in the 70's, which means she may only be 40-50 years old. :-)

I dunno, the first several people who posted all reported good results
dealing with Universal - then a day or so later people with complaints
started posting.

It probably depends on what you're ordering.

It probably also depends on how you deal with them.

If the first question you ask is "what's your best price" you give the
impression rock bottom price is more important to you than good service,
and you're not likely to become a loyal customer.

If you talk down to them, they're not likely to enjoy helping you.

If you're friendly and reasonable, most people will put a little extra
effort into trying to reciprocate.
