Though I had completed all the requirements for a double PhD at Wayne State
(one in Rhetoric and Public Address and the other in Interpersonal
Communication), they degree had not actually been conferred in 2000. Problem
with one of my dissertation advisors, who had left Wayne St, signing off on my
dissertation.

Most academics take a position before completing their doctorate. They then
finish it up their dissertation and the final approval processes, including a
defense.

But, they don't even have PhD programs at Grand Valley State, do they?
