Default Help with Sony ICF-SW1000T with poor sensitivity

Perhaps someone has come across this.

My Sony SW1000T seems to have lost most of its sensitivity on AM.
Local MW stations still come in fine, but distant MW or SW is usually
weak at best, and often swamped by loud interference like you might
get from a TV. I am using batteries, and have tried it far from
obvious sources of interference with the same results. FM reception
is still fine, so I don't think it's a problem with the whip antenna
connection. Any ideas?

I can't even figure out how to open the thing. Removing the two big
screws on the back allows you to pull the top edge apart a bit, and
removing the tiny screws on the bottom loosens the tape mechanism, but
I can't get it fully opened without fear of breaking something.

TIA

Michael.

Curiously, after trying to open it up, I screwed it back together and
it had regained its former performance. Somehow, my poking and
prodding eliminated the short or open joint that must have been
causing the problem. Let's hope it stays that way.

Michael:

Ya gotta love and hate those kind of repairs. They are quite satisfying in
that you have the radio fixed and working as good as new. If you played
your theatrics correctly, somebody important was watching as you poked and
prodded ... suspecting all the while, that you are a ninkompoop. Now they
think you could troubleshoot a Space Shuttle snag.

The downside is not knowing what caused it, what fixed it, or if it will
give out again soon. Even worse, wondering if it will break again quite
quickly, right in front of whomever you had previously impressed!

Regards,
Lee
