How long do you get on a set of batteries? I've never tried them in that
radio. I've been thinking of getting a 12v gel-cell like used in
emergency lighting for powering the set. They don't spill like regular
lead acid batteries.

You can get a sealed lead-acid 12V battery that are made for portable depth
finders, comes with charger too and usually only $20. A bit smaller than a
motorcycle batter.

I've thought of doing just that, but I've been 'spearmintin' with
NiMH D cells, and they seem to last forever. Plus, they fit
inside the receiver, so that saves the space that would be taken
by another piece of kit. However, when I start taking QRP to
the field, I think I'm going to have to do just that.

I've gotten a good week's use, with about 12 hours a day and headphones.
Turning on the dial lights really seems to suck the current out.
It's interesting- when I go on these little DXPeditions, I find
I don't have to crank up the AF gain to drown out TV RFI
and powerline / Fluorescent hash, so I'm sure that has a lot
to do with the batter life.
