Is it clear what these prisoners are being held for? If these prisoners are
prisoners of war with important information, should they be grilled by
poorly trained guards?

I'm sure we're holding a large number of common criminals. The man the
Brits are accused of abusing was described as a suspected thief. How is the
treatment of this suspected thief better than the treatment he would have
received from Saddam's goons?
