Default Air America may return to original owners

(Any shortwave outlets now please?)

Press reports suggest that control of troubled US liberal talk radio network
Air America is on the verge of returning to its original owners. Sheldon and
Anita Drobny, the Chicago couple who founded the network but sold it to a
group of investors before broadcasts began, are said to be poised to
re-acquire a majority shareholding with the help of a major new investor.
The station has had a troubled launch, and is currently not on the air in
the Chicago area. It closed down its Chicago and Los Angeles offices 10 May,
laying off about 15 to 20 advertising salespeople. However, CEO David
Goodfriend, says Air America will announce new affiliates in Los Angeles and
Chicago soon. The network is currently available in New York, Portland,
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Chapel Hill, NC, Sacramento, CA and suburban Southern
California, as well as on satellite and the Internet.

Most of the big names in domestic SW use it as a fill in to their local
network coverage. It would make sense for Air America to do the same, but
they prefer satellite, maybe because one of their executives has expirence
working with Dish network.

I think SW would work for AA's intended audience, just as it works for the
other political talk show hosts. It could even boost satellite receiver
sales, as they could broadcast their programming to a national audience and
promise clearer and more reliable reception from a satellite service.

I hope the Drobny's make alot of money out of the deal. Sell high, buy back
low!

I have the impression that Air America wanted to control their affiliates
programming 24/7. At least at the start, as they seem to have changed their
policy to a more typical time brokered arrangement. But the old arrangement
could be done on SW. Brother Stair was controlling the programming of one
of WWCR's transmitters, every hour of every day for a couple of years. If
WBCQ couldn't do it, WWCR or WWRB might be able to.

Let's not forget Rush Limbaugh was on WRNO, and he loved blabbing about how
he was heard around the world. That's not exactly true, although he was
probably heard well in Mexico and the Carribean. I'm sure he was heard well
in the Midwest most of the time, and it was a useful fill-in when some local
station preempeted Rush for a ball game.

Another thing they aren't doing is a free satellite link such as Brother
Stair does.

Wonder how many sharp knives or bright bulbs can be found in the box labeled
"Air America"?
