Roy:

Here is a link to the" endless debate " over

Grundig 400 Sony 7600GR Sangean 909A

http://www.radiointel.com/portwars.htm

- and a link to other receiver reviews.

http://www.radiointel.com/reviews.htm

in short, there are many good shortwave receivers under $150;
But
an external antenna , even 30 feet of wire strung up over the bushes,
is very important, IMHO..

Do you want to listen to amateur radio operators and utility (military/air)
stations? If so, then get a radio with SSB capabilities.
Do you want to listen to major broadcasters, or do you want to be able to
pull in distant, weak stations?

Do you want a radio you can carry along with you, or a tabletop radio that
you can hook an external antenna to for best performance?

There are a number of good choices of portable SW radios in the under $150
range. The excellent Sony ICF-SW7600GR can be found for $150. There is also
the Grundig YB-400P for about the same price. Degen is a Chinese firm that's
making nicely performing portables, such as the DE-1102 and DE-1103 for
under $90 each. These are a great value.

Tabletop radios are better for catching weak, distant stations ("DX") but
they are quite a bit more expensive than the portables. If you want top DX
performance and are able to hook up an external long wire antenna, these are
best, but again, they will cost a lot more than a portable ($500).

There are also numerous excellent used receivers you could check out, but if
you go this route you will want to check some reviews first. Try eham's
receiver reviews at http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/8. I'm sure a few
folks here will give you their learned input too.

I don't own one, but from reading the reviews the Degen 1102 sounds like a
great radio and get be found for under $60 (with shipping included)
on Ebay. The 1102 appears to have the same ability as the Grundig YB 400
which I have own. The YB 400 is a fine radio but a bit more expensive.
Somewhere around $120 if you search for a deal on it.

IMO, the previously mentioned Sony 7600GR (available in your price
range) has the three most useful portable features--SSB, synch
detection, and sufficient preset memories so a person new to the hobby
doesn't have to commit frequencies to memory. But, with the
availability of the Degan DE-1102 and DE-1103 new on eBay, I think
another question is relevant--do you want a radio that (based on word
of mouth) is an excellent performer and still costs considerably less.
If the portable is to be the only radio you're likely to get, I'd
probably spring for the Sony. But if you think you might want to
upgrade later to a new/used tabletop in ,say, the $500 range, the
Degans enable you to get a start with a good, reasonable priced
portable, see if you enjoy what you hear, and put the extra $$$ away
for the *next* radio .

Thanks for the lists. Very informative. On another subject, did you feel
the earthquake that rattled southern California today?

I want to receive as many bands as possible. SSB sounds good.

Probably have to buy one of each (tabletop and portable). Time to start
saving nickels.
