It sounds to me like Google is going to "piggy back" their new service onto the Usenet groups, not replace them. From their "About Google Groups" page:

"You can also use Google Groups to post your own comments to an existing Usenet newsgroup."

Personally, I think they're messing with a tried and true public forum and I hope their efforts will flop. I'm sure they are envious of YahooGroup's success and would like to get part of their "business".
