* Dan Rather=B4s lack of involvement in the discredited story about
President Bush=B4s military service was "shocking," NBC=B4s chief said
Friday, promising it would never have happened at his network.

* "The degree to which responsibility was abdicated on a piece about
the president of the United States six weeks before the election was
something that would have never been done by Tom Brokaw or Brian
Williams and the lack of involvement in a piece of that magnitude was
shocking," Jeff Zucker, NBC Universal Television Group president, said
at a news conference.

* "The big shock to us is that none of these safeguards were in place
there," Zucker said. "Nothing like that could have gotten through (at
NBC) at any level because of the safeguards that were instituted more
than a decade ago."
