Hi

Ok right now I'm using my JRC NRD-525 with a 35 Ft dipole and a 4:1 Current
balun coupled with a MFJ-959 pre-amp/tuner. I don't use the tuner that
often. As you know it amps the noise too along with the signal so I use only
it when absolutely neccessary. I'm on the 23rd floor of a building so I get
good signals.

That's your problem... you're using a dipole. A dipole is for use on a very
narrow range of frequencies. Now, using the tuner, you might get a better match
to the receiver.

My suggestion would be to use a single wire, and match it with a transformer. I
think you might get better broadband performance from that.

However, you may be somewhat limited being on a 23rd floor.

That's not so lucky, no pun intended.

Yes I am limited to the type of ant I use on the terrace. But, I seem to get
less noise using the balun. But being on the 23rd floor I have no real
obstructions. So you think I should go a random single wire? What kind of
transformer do you mean? I research I did on ants say you need 4 leads for a
blaun to work. What can add to a single wire?

Thanks for the tip.

pardon the intrude! first- Ace is one of the posters i
would ask an antenna Q of. he has helped myself, and many
others on this list. second- have you thought of a loop?
i am one of the fortunate people to aquire an Ed-loop,
("Torus-Tuner Loop") from Ed before he died. i'm hoping
someone else will pick up where he left off. i got the
L P on the Edloop with a sat800 just this last sat. i also
use the sony loop in the car when on the road. it's a
little odd to see the loop in the pass-window, but it works.
J.A. uses a wellbrook loop in his apt. he says it works great.
put out a few Q here, or google it and see what you find.
how bout it- RHF ? you hang in the antenna/yahoo gps, what
have you got to say??? ymmv- just my .02...

DRIFTER,

YES - Since "LUCKY" is 23 Floors Up-in-the-Sky with a Balcony,
he can take his MFJ-959 Pre-Selector and build a single turn

RHF. you always come through. got enough info
to keep him busy. should find the best ant. for
his needs. great work there RHF. thanks...

You can wind up a transformer so that you only need 3 leads, rather than
grounding it at the feedpoint.

This is the same concept that the RF Systems Magnetic Longwire Balun (MLB) uses.

It then uses your receiver ground as an aid in completing the path.

Here, I'm using 10:1 homebrew matching transformers and they are grounded at the
feedpoint, but as I've said, there is a way to get around that if it is not
practical or feasible.

Here are some matching transformer/balun articles:
