I've been wondering, though, if there's another small MW receiver
which has all of the positives except the synch detector (I can't
imagine another radio this size with synch) but with better audio.

The Grundig G4000A (Yacht Boy 400PE) has ssb and is claimed to have very
good audio for a portable.
