Study links childhood cancer, power lines

LONDON, England, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A British study finds that children who

live near high-voltage electrical power lines may have twice the risk of
some kinds of cancer.

The Times of London reports that the Childhood Cancer Research Group at

Oxford University studied 70,000 children, half of them with cancer. Gerald
Draper, the lead author, said that high-voltage power lines appear to have
been a factor in 20 to 30 of the 500 cases of childhood leukemia in the
country every year.

"The findings have been surprising," Draper said. "It has made us want to

figure out whether power lines might be to blame. But I feel we have not
yet found out conclusively that that is the case."

Draper said his group completed their research more than a year ago, but he

asked the Department of Health to delay releasing the findings while he
studied them further.

Reason to bury all power lines maybe??....And bury BPL under a rock
hopefully!!

Question?

Those of you that live in a townhome or other area with buried
utilities.....Can you tell me if these area's seem to be quieter overall
than locations with overhead utilities?

I lived in both a house and a townhouse in Reston (Virginia).

The bad things about the buried phone and the buried power lines was that
they weren't anymore reliable than areas in which I've lived used power
poles.

The lines buried ha no noticeable effect on SW listening for any reason - hum
or otherwise.

/However/, notice that the places I've lived were residential, as above, and
BEQs and barracks. There were never high voltage lines anywhere close.

I started paying attention to the "high-voltage cancer, especially on
children" argument about thirty years ago and both "sides" have proved their
arguments innumerable times (to their own satisfaction, anyway).

The courts have never recognized the phony "evidence" presented by claimants
attempting to link cancer to near-field electric currents. Partly because it
is easy to show we are daily immersed in EMF exponentially stronger in our
own homes and workpalce than any transmission lines can impart on us, due to
the distances involved. Even attorneys for lineworkers have attempted to
show causal relationship, and to no avail. But I guess they never had an
ambulance chaser like former Senator Edwards who is an expert at
manipulating Juries with junk science. The latest study referenced in this
thread is baseless, like the scores done before it.

Yes, absolutely. You can confirm this yourself by driving around a
neighborhood with overhead power lines and listening to your BCB AM car
radio. Then drive around a neighborhood with buried cable.

Interestingly, CWs assessment may be correct. Since the first actual
study of this in Sweden several years back, which seemed to indicate
that children near the magnetic fields of powerlines were at risk of
leukemia, there have been several other studies conducted that show
varying results, including utterly no connection at all.

Others have pointed out that the magnetic field of the earth itself is
far stronger at any point that the EMF of a powerline even at close
range. This is fairly easily demonstrated with a simple compass.

My own personal opinion is that it is better to be safe than sorry,
and that humans and other living things should be shielded from
unnatural and unintentional harm - but, assuming we make reasonable
efforts to resolve this to a confident answer, powerline EMF does not
strike me as the big devil du jour, and there is no need to panic over
this one.

It makes a bunch of sense, for about 10 other good reasons, to put
them underground, though.
