Default newbie question

greetings, i am trying to help my mom receive the german radio program
deutche welle. she has a portable short-wave radio, type, model unknown,
but apparently there is a ton of static and such. i'm thinking her radio
is rather old so if i were to buy a new unit can anyone recommend any
brands? she lives in the ozark mountains but at a rather high elevation
so i dont think interference from surrounding mountains will be an
issue. she wants a radio that she can move around the house. also, will
she need a large antenna?
any help/info is appreciated

You didn't say how much you were wanting to spend, but the Grundig S350 is a
really nice portable with decent sound and digital readout. It uses a whip
antenna so no outside antenna should be necessary.

Yes -- receiver reviews from Radio Nederland Wereldomroep, at URL:
http://www2.rnw.nl/rnw/en/features/m...s/rx_curr.html

You will be a lot better off with a outdoor antenna than a whip

Whips are usually part of the radio -- mine is 4 foot high

The best radio in the world won't pick up beans without a good antenna

Whips will pull in the strong ones if conditions are right.

See CC Crane for a roll up 23 foot antenna

The S350 runs around $100 or so new. The whip antenna is approximately 3
feet high when fully extended.

Try eham.net for receiver reviews.

You will never go wrong with a Sony 7600GR.
It's very sensitiv on the whip but also works nice(r) on bigger antennas
connected to the antenna jack. A 30ft wire will do just fine in most cases.
For broadcasts in german language go to the ILG page to get the
schedules. http://www.ilgradio.de/ilgradio.htm
The winter schedule is currently in preparation. It should be available
end of december.
The schedules of Deutsche Welle can be found he

You might select 'german' to get the german broadcast schedules.
Give your mom "viele Grüsse aus Berlin".

CJ,

I've been down the same road as you. I bought my mom a Sony ICF-SW35 for
$85, very reliable little portable. It has 50 memories, batteries last a
long time and it is extremely easy to use. She doesn't need to know the
frequency's as she can simply scan the bands and stop on any German language
station she hears. If you get one of those wind up antennas to clip on the
whip it should be more than adequate for her.

The other alternative is satellite TV which has some Deutsche Welle TV and
radio but that is another subject.

You should be aware... if static is your problem, a new radio might not
help. It could be interference from other household items like
flourescent lights, TVs, computer monitors, fish tank heaters, neon
signs, or even problems with the electrical grid in your neighborhood.
A new radio will pick up this static, too.

You should go around her house with the radio, and see if the
interference gets stronger or weaker. Unplug her TV and see how the
radio sounds. Turn off flourescent lights. Or take the radio to a
local park and try it out. If it's still staticky, the radio is
probably to blame. But if you can get the radio away from the static,
you'll need to find out where that static is really coming from.
