I haven't owned a 909 but have heard controversial discussions about the
"Super" mods
that the vendor peddles. Therefor I stayed away as it is over priced IMO.

My philosophy is that if it requires numerous or expensive mods that is a
sign that
the fundamental design is flawed!

I personally would strongly recommend the Sony ICF-SW7600GR (about $135) or
a used
Sony ICF-SW55 (about $250, no sync detector but the King of true portables)
if you can
find one. Both of these radios consistently make my expensive ham gear
cringe.
