National, April 17, 2000 -- Alcatel Space, Europe's leading satellite exporter, today announced the completion and delivery to Hughes Space & Communications Company of the first of two state-of-the-art communications payloads for XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ:XMSR). The second payload is scheduled for delivery in May 2000. The XM payload was manufactured and integrated onto its module at Alcatel Space's Toulouse, France, facility. On Friday, April 14, 2000, it was shipped to Hughes' spacecraft factory in El Segundo, CA, where the 3,500-pound payload module will be integrated into Hughes' 702 spacecraft bus. Hughes Space & Communications (HSC), the world's leading manufacturer of commercial communications satellites, will conduct functional, antenna range and environmental testing on the spacecraft in preparation for launch later this year. Big deal. GM makes the Humvee and provided parts (including allison transmissions) for the Abrams M-1A1. And there's their GM Defense division, as well. --Mike L. |

Sorta, it was called just plain Hughes at that time though in full it was General Motors Hughes Electronics, we seldom called ourselve GM. GM bought Hughes Aircraft then it was split up for sale to Raytheon (most of the military business) and one of the remaining divisions, HSC - Hughes Space and Communications, was sold to Boeing. DirecTV was a subsidiary of HSC in it's early days, a creation of the folks in Hughes who operated the satellite fleet mostly known as 'Galaxy.' I know the history as I've been there 25 years, since it was Hughes Aircraft Company - under the umbrella of the Hughes Medical Foundation. In fact David, I am a Project Manager on the XM Satellite program. |

As mentioned, I'm a 25 year veteran of Hughes Aircraft/General Motors Hughes Electronics/Boeing Satellite Systems. And guess what - we've just changed our name again! We are now SDC - Satellite Design Center of Space and Information Systems, Integrated Defense Systems, Boeing. I'm sure you understand, just a division buried in a larger company - not sure if some other(s) will catch on though. |
