Default Australian Communications Authority releases long awaited BPL discussion paper!!

The ACA has released a discussion paper Word 97-2000 (1 mb) or PDF (182 kb)
calling for comments on managing interference from broadband over power line
(BPL) communications. The paper explores a range of options that could be
used to manage interference from the systems.

BPL communications is an emerging technology that uses electricity networks
for the transmission of data, voice and video.

Using the electricity network to conduct BPL signals will result in leakage
of radiofrequency emission into the surrounding environment that could cause
interference to radiocommunications services. Potentially affected
applications include defence operations, shortwave broadcasting, maritime
and aeronautical communications, radio astronomy, amateur radio and numerous
short range applications.

The challenge for the ACA is to establish arrangements that do not
unnecessarily inhibit BPL deployments but, at the same time, provide
measures to protect radiocommunications services from unacceptable
interference.

The deadline for written submissions on the discussion paper is 24 June
2005. They should be sent to:

Manager BPL Project Team

Australian Communications Authority

PO Box 78

Belconnen ACT 2616

AUSTRALIA

The submissions received will assist the ACA in developing appropriate
arrangements for the management of interference for BPL systems. After the
ACA has considered submissions and undertaken further consultation where
necessary, it will publish an outcomes paper indicating the preferred
arrangements.
