Freedom of Speech versus the hate speech laws.

If we allow ourselves to get too neurotic about speech, we soon won't be
able to talk at all. Everyone can find something objectionable. Fat or
skinny people, people with bad teeth, blondes, short or tall people,
freckled, pale, or dark skinned people, bald people, hairy people (I have
a co-worker that actually had his wife shave his back so that she could
see what he looked like without all the hair), old people, young people,
Christians, Muslims, Jews, men, women, gays, straights, country or city
folk, northerners or southerners, people from the east or the west in the
U.S. or any area in between, Americans, Canadians,
Mexicans,..................................... etc.

If Hal Turner could say ****** on the radio in the U.S., I would imagine
that it is not illegal, especially since it is used so often in movies.
It's tasteless, I'd admit, but so are many of the topics that I hear on
the mainstream shows, say from Howard Stern. It is for that reason that I
don't listen to Howard Stern, yet I don't campaign to have him removed
from the airwaves.

Stereotyping Chinese people, they can't say the Rs in words. I used to go
to a Chinese fast food restaurant in a local mall. They had bins labeled
Spoons, Knives, Folks.

They stereotyped themselves, by mistake.

Hate Speech laws allow others to set the parameters for what is offensive
and what isn't. This is ludicrous.

Perhaps a better method is financial pressure. When people are offended,
they complain to the advertisers. If the advertisers care, they will pull
their advertisements, possibly pressuring the supposedly offensive show
into making changes. But if the advertiser feels confident that most of
their customers won't be offended, they will not make any changes.

Speech calling for violence against others, regardless of their
affiliations, should not be tolerated. To me, that would be hate speech.

People should try not to be offended so easily. Ever watch Monty Python
or "The Young Ones"? This may help you to desensitize your sense of being
offended.

but not so in the UK ?

Do you get thrown off the radio in the USA

Today I was shocked to hear racism from a BBC radio presenter. It was
Radio 1's Chart Show with JK and Joel at between 16:45 and 16:50 on
Sunday 15th May 2005. There was a mention of something Chinese, and
one of the presenters said "Ah-So" in a mocking way. I have already
put in a complaint, and the least the BBC should do is retraining.
