Community radio station 3PBS FM may be in breach of
broadcasting laws by apparently selling airtime to
bands and performers.

broadcasting laws by apparently selling airtime to
bands and performers.


An expose on Triple J this week found the station was
offering bands in Melbourne sponsorship deals which
included a two hour live set on air.


The Broadcasting Services Act allows a maximum of 5
minutes per hour for sponsorships.


The act also insists that all sponsorships are clearly
identified on air, which did not happen on PBS.


The sectors peak body the Community Broadcasting
Association of Australia (CBAA) says the law is clear when it comes to
sponsorship.


General Manager Barry Melville told Triple J, stations
must ensure that "sponsorship will not be a factor in
determining access to broadcasting time".


Triple J says it obtained a letter from PBS to artists
offering to make a bands CD "album of the week" for a
fee.


PBS Music Manger Sarah De Borre admitted this was in
the letter, but said the policy no longer exists.


The PBS website says the station has been treated
unfairly by Triple.
