MLA-2/B Loop antenna info
Our astronmer friend is cleaning house in preperation to moving
to NZ. She loaned me a couple of older books. "The Handbook of Solar Flare Monitoring and propagation forcasting" , by Carl M Cherman is fascinating. One antenna is too interesting to ignore. The MLA-2/B loop anenna is deigned to be used from 3~25MHz for both RX and TX operations. It is based on "an impedence transfomer from a 50 Ohm transmission line to the nominal 377 ohm resistance of free space." The publishd pattern is very interesting. A quick net search didn't bring anything up. It was made by Antenna Research Associates of Beltsville MD. I have visited their web site and sent a Email. I was just wondering if anyone in the group had run into this odd antenna. It is reported to have "the performance of a half wave antenna with a device no larger then 54 inches". If accurate this could be a usefull antenna. Another oldie but goodie is J.A. Ratcliff's "Sun Earth and Radio". The Copyright date is 1970 but the information is still of interest to anyone who uses HF radio. I had heard of this book and tried to locate one for a longtime. Terry |

Steve --------------------------------------- I really need to find a winning lottery ticket to buy all the neat toys out there! Too many toys, not enough money. I may have a line on a MLA-2B. A friend of a frined has one he never has used. Let the wheeling and dealing begin. Terry |

I suspect their price range is "business & military-only-type prices" yodar ----------------------- VERY PRICEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But built like a cross between a Rolls Royce and a Tank. The MLA-2/B I picked up today is awesome. If the thing works as good as it is built I will have fun. The owner even has, or at least had, the tech manual that goes into all the theory. I think I could almost build one of these. The guy bought it for 25$ at Dayton about 30 years ago. If it works I intend to trade him a spare Pro2067 for it. Bad and nasty Tstorms have moved in so I am not even firing any of my radio gear up. If I get the manual I will scan and forward to RHF for inclussion in the files section. So many toys, so little time. Terry |

Back in the 1940's,Rolls Royce had a factory in
Massatwobumps.(Massachutssets) (look it up if y'all dont believe me) That factory in Massatwobumps was useing American made wireing (harnesses) and differentials and some other American made thingys.(I have a book here about that) The American made Rolls Royce cars were much more dependable and reliable and they didn't break down. The "official" Rolls Royce story (look at what happened when Jaguar merged with Ford in America) in limeyland was they just weren't selling enough Rolls Royce cars in America.Back in the 1920's and 1930's,Mercedes Benz (Lawd,,I wanttttt a Marcedez Benzzzzzz) (not me!) and Fiat had factories in New York and Chevrolet and Harley Davidson had factories in China and Ford had factories all over the World back in the Ford T model days.I have a book here about that to.That married Irish woman wayyyy over yonder across the big pond whom I email chat with lives about seven miles from the Rolls Royce,Godwood,England factory.brits dont know s..t about how to build cars.Hey,Rooster Cogburn movie is fixin to start on tb now,,, I am outta herrreeee,,,,,, cuhulin |
