PCR1000 noise commnets:
I traded for a PCR1000withthe DSP module.
I wouldn't have spent ~$500 for it, but as part
of the trade it is a usefull radio. Not great, but
a radio with some clear uses.
PC noise can kill your efforts to receive
LEO WXSATS.
Use good quality coax.
A diskcone isn't the best, or even a good choice.
Consider a homebrew QDH instead.
Mount the antenna away from your PC.
Make sure you PC, monitor etc is WELL
groudned.
This means more then a 8' ground rod!
You can't have too amny Feritte RFI beads
on your coax, and all the lines into/out fo
your PC. Keyboard, network, modem, telephone
line, printer ect.
Use an isolation transformer between the
PCR1000 and your PC!!!!!! One with a internal
RF shield is prefreerd but the radio shack 10:10:
automotive transformer is much better then nothing.
You might consdier building an 8ohm:10K step
up islolation transformer. I used a rat shack 8ohm:1K,
the a 1100 ohm fixed resistor and a 10K pot feeding
a 10K:10K(with internal RF shield).
Bond all of your equipment with 1" braid to the best
ground you can get!!

If your PCR1000 has the DSP module it will run HOT.
I added self stick 1/2 rubber feet to allow air flow. It
really helped reduce drift.

Hiya, Terry

Thanx for all the info. I like the idea of the isolation transformer a lot.
I'm getting the idea that it may be absolutely necessary given what I have
heard thus far. I dont have the DSP module in it, but I may eventually
order one. I have the UT-106 in my R75 and I use it all the time.

I know the discone wont be a good antenna for weather sat images. I figure
I'd make a discone as a multi purpose hf antenna. It probably wont cut it
for weather sat, but I figured I'd give it a try. A quadrifilar helical
antenna would be good for that, but not so good as an all purpose antenna.
I'll probably make the discone for now and build a quadrifilar helix later
on. I'm also going to try out my two roof antennas with the PCR-1000 and
see if they do anything useful.
