Sony is greedy...there's no doubt about that. The E1 has many more
features than the SW77 and I hope, but will be a bit surprised, if the
E1 is equal to the SW77.

I always found the audio on the SW77 disappointing. I would think that
the E1 would be better in that regard.

If you go to www.radiointel.com, there's a review of the E1. The review
is very positive, but a bit strange. The reviewer seems to prefer the
E1, overall, to the Sat 800. However, he *doesn't* seem to think that
it's a knockout and in the closing paragraph he even describes the E1
as "a compact Sat 800 with numerous extra goodies".

Even though the tone of the review is very positive, I don't think this
is the sort of think thing Eton was hoping to hear.

The reviewer also plays up the connection with Drake....the same
connection that everyone seems to play up.....except--curiously--Drake.

I just looked at that review again. The name "Drake" is mentioned four
times in that review, and the name "Eton" is never mentioned
anywhere....not once! Someone reading that review would never know that
Eton had any association with this receiver. Am I the only one who
finds this a little weird?

While I don't think Drake has an exclusive on the phasing detector and
Drake doesn't indicate that they have had any involvement in the design
of the radio, you need to also look at the positive things in the review.

The review has a significant amount of quantative content(numbers). Too
many review are of the "my new radio is the best radio ever" nature.
Other radio reviews focus too much on the touchy-feely stuff with
nothing of substance to back it up.

The reviewer has gone to the effort to get or find the numeric data
presented. He has also made comparions to other high-end portable radios
in addition to the company's previous high end radio. (I'm referring
to high-end portables and not implying a comparison to much more
expensive table-top radios.)

The reviewer has also given us the best description of the features of
the radio that I have seen. This is much better than re-hashing all the
same stuff we have seen before.

The review contains references the things that some might find as
shortcomings. Many reviewers will only present positive comments.

The review does not answer all my questions about the radio but it does
tell me the radio is worth looking at.

I agree. I don't think it's a bad review, as it has lots of good info.

face value. I might not accept the reviewer's interpretation of those
numbers or any overall conclusions he draws about the receiver, though.


Whatever the value of this particular reviewers observations, it is
just plain weird that he never mentioned the manufacturer of the E1
even once, while mentioning Drake four times. Someone totally new to
shortwave would walk away from this review thinking the E1 is in fact
the "Drake E1". In that respect it is misleading.

The radio's manufacturer was mentioned twice on the radiointel page that
links to the radio. So to get to the review one reads the paragraph that
has the manufacturer's name.

If it is so much an issue why not bring up the same point about the
subject of this thread?
