Default Australian Social Security V US Social Security

I cant understand how Americans can survive without a decent Social
Security System
We have a very healthy economy
and
a very significant surplus which can sustain the social program.

In the US There are five major categories of benefits paid for through
your Social
Security taxes: Retirement, Disability, Family benefits, -- Survivors,
and Medicare. (SSI benefits, which are not financed by Social Security
taxes, In Australia we have Unemployment etc all here

http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/filestores/co029_0507/$file/co029_0507en.pdf

How is the US system different to Australia?

True a social security system should provide food, clothing,
shelter and basic health care; but it should not be providing
cigarettes, alcohol, illicit drugs, designer label clothing, or
elective surgery (for cosmetic reasons alone). It should
also only be provide whilst people are UNABLE for reasons
beyond themselves to care for themselves.

The problems today are that many feel that social security
should provide all the comforts of society as well as the
neccessities and that it should be available when they
choose not to care for themselves. That is where the
current systemi s at fault and where most people complain
about the bludgers.

In my community we have a number of people who are
always whinging about not being able to get a job, but
they turn up for interview in dirty clothing and unbathed
because they know they will not be employed. We also have
many businesses screaming for people to fill vacancies.
Why do we have unemployed people and unfilled vacancies
becasue the unemployed cannot be made to take any
employment for which they are capable of filling, they
are only given the choice of taking the job. well that
should change and hopefully it will, then we should see
a large reduction in unemployment.

But we only have 5% Unemployment in Australia and no poor people really
thanks to our Social Security system.
Which is available to all unemployed people by Law

Isnt that a Good Thing ?

Plus a Rent Subsidy and Cheap Bus and Train travel

Who says

How can anyone in the USA speak of an unemployment rate while people
stumble across the desert by the millions, and get work almost
instantly?
One of the requirements here, for drawing unemployment benefits, is to
show proof that you are actively seeking a job. Before I retired, I
could expect, several times a week, for someone to shuffle up, and ask,
"you don't need no help, do you"? Then, they would hold out the little
government form I was expected to fill out, to prove that they had
asked for a job.
Most of them, if asked what they can do, turn out to have a bad back,
can't lift more than 10 pounds, or a bad knee, can't stand for long, or
walk very far, or maybe a bad back, bad knees, and hemmroids. Maybe
some of them actually do, but the biggest problem many of them have is
a lack of guts and pride.
I draw social security, and feel no shame, but I worked from the age of
15, for 45 years, took asprin for the pain, kept my moaning to myself,
dragged my tired butt out in the morning, and did what needed to be
done. Excuse me, if I reserve my pity, for those who honestly deserve
it.

But they have always been treated as second class citizens.
My guess is this clown from down under is nothing more than a troll.

G'day,

Social Security in the US means something different from here. Their
Social
Security is financed by individual and
employer contributions. In Australia it all comes from general revenue.

Also some schemes we have the Commonwealth government do are done by
the
State governments in America.

Our system has actually taken some ideas from them. Our current "work
for
the dole" system is a version of their workfare.
On the other hand we have had the superannuation gurantee for years ,
they
are still debating Social Security privitisation.

Incidently their unemployment level is about the same as ours.
