Ask your friend to email the Ship's website (if there is one) or if your
friend knows any of the people who work on that Ship,ask them about a
good Shortwave radio.Chances are,at least a few of those people own a
Shortwave radio.

I don't know how it is nowdays,but some people whom were planning an
Ocean Voyage,they would check out some Freighter Ships.Real good food
and decent living quarters and first hand looks at how those Freighter
Ships work and usually cheaper prices too.Of course there is always the
good old Stowaway method too,sort of like Hobos hopping Freight Trains.

I think Freighter travel is the way to do that nowadays..
