Default Freeplay Summit dark lcd display

Hi!

I'm wondering if anyone else has this Freeplay Summit crank/solar
radio? The LCD display has some sort of tinted face making hard to
read indoors.

Do other Summit owners have this problem or do I just happen to have a
bad display? Temperature is not a problem, all other lcd devices here
are normal. A Google search also mentions this in a 2002 review.

I don't own a Freeplay radio, but I have read before the Freeplay radios
made in Africa are better than the Freeplay radios made in
China.Something about the windup springs in the African made Freeplay
radios are better quality and not so likely to break.
