Default AFN Diego Garcia

Thanks to dxAce for the heads up on Diego Garcia.
Very much back on air with strong signal here.
4319 came booming in well before sunset here with a strong signal, perhaps
indicating they are using quite a high power TX, maybe 10 Kw.
In the morning I am getting 12579 quite clearly as well.

Diego Garcia is 9,600 miles from dxAce in Michigan, so that is a good catch
= well done!

A more challenging DX catch for me is AFN Pearl Harbour which is 11,600
miles from my QTH (path over the Antarctic).
10320 comes in quite regularly but 6350 is more difficult and less
frequently heard.

13362 AFN Guam was also coming in nicely this morning - doesn't often come
through on this frequency.

Have fun and good DX

They're certainly coming in well here, much better than when I last heard them
in 2000. Whether they upgraded the antenna or transmitter I don't know. Perhaps
just our current position in the solar cycle.

At any rate they were off for some time, I recall that the original antenna may
have been destroyed by a tropical cyclone, but not sure. If that was the case
they were certainly in no hurry to repair it.

Who knows how long they may stay on this time.

Default AFN Diego Garcia

Greetings to All! I see so many posts about Diego Garcia and
understanding that it is a good DX catch I decided to give it a try
this PM here in South Carolina on 4.319 and received a strong signal.
What I heard was some type of digital transmittion. I do not have any
idea of what Diego Garcia transmits or what type of transmition to be
listening for. Can you tell me what to be listening for and a little
bio on the station? I would appreciate your info and time. Have a
great weekend! Jon in South Carolina.

AFN is the U.S. Armed forces radio network "Armed Forces Network" and
broadcast on USB upper sideband in voice. They use popular programming - a
lot of sport, relays from CBS and a lot of messages to the troops. They are
interesting to listen to.
They are situated on major bases around the world and their sideband
transmitters are usually only 3 to 10 Kw in power, making some of these
stations great DX catches.

See http://myafn.dodmedia.osd.mil/radio/shortwave/
For you to receive Diego Garcia in South Carolina you would have to consult
a sunset/sunrise map based on your location and Diego Garcia.
They transmit on 4319 Khz during their nightime which is about 1400 UTC to
0100 UTC. Then they switch to their daytime transmitter of 12,579 Khz from
0100 to 1400 UTC (approximate). Try sunset in South Carolina for the 4 Mhz
and sunrise at your QTH for the 12 Mhz

Sunrise and sunset at your home in South Carolina would give you your best
chance, and perhaps overcome the digital transmission that is interfering
with reception from Diego Garcia.

Good luck and have fun
