With regard to the R72........................................
Would I find much improvement over my dx394

I've had 3 R-72s and really liked them (wish I had kept one!) Not as
feature "packed" as the older R-71A or R-75 but definitely an order of
magnitude better than a DX-394. I would have to rate them pretty close
to the Yaesu FRG-100. A very "solid" receiver in my experience. Were
poorly rated due to the excessive price when they were new.
