Which external antenna are you using? I recently found that the wire
antenna that came with my Kaito 1102 didn't do much for me, but the
reel antenna that came with my SW7600GR is quite effective.

Try using an external antenna with a co-ax lead in.

The average house / apt has all sorts of electronic noise that a coax
lead-in reduces,
increasind SW reception / Clarity..
