Default DXing with (A)DSL (broadband) internet conexion

Does anyone using DSL/broadband noticed any problems from QRN
while DXing ?

I am thinking to upgrade my connection into ADSL 768/124

Zach,

I have an ASDL wired network with the router/modem (Linksys AG401)
and switch (SMC 6505TX) in the same room as my RX. I have two 30 ft
runs of CAT5 cable which more or less parallel my indoor wire which
runs in the picture rail. I detect no difference in background noise
or QRN between the router being on or off.

My two sources of interference are the switch mode PSU for my HP
6620 networked printer and from my Samtron 76E monitor. I have only
recently returned to amateur radio after a 40 year break so am still
working on these niggles. Solving the printer PSU problem is as
simple as unplugging it but the monitor may well be more
complicated, especially if it is radiated from the deflection coils
rather than mains borne. Does anyone know if TFT monitors are
quieter at RF?

Charlie.

DSL modems are notoriously noisy in the HF spectrum. Ditto for any 10/100
networking.

Noise from such sources is QRM (man-made), not QRN (natural, i.e.
lightning or solar)

QRM: Interference
QRN: Noise (no distinction if man-made or not)

I have a 10/100 LAN in my home and no interference problems. I know
plenty of other hams who've done likewise. Indeed, many of the big
multioperator contest stations use Ethernet LANs to connect the various
operating positions.

A very successful station here in the Nashville area has a DSL modem *in
his shack* and no problems. (wish he could say the same for his
electric power utility!)

I'm sure noisy networking equipment does exist but I wouldn't say it's a
common problem.

or solar)

At least while I was coming up in ham radio:

QRM - interference from another radio transmitter
QRN - interference from something that isn't intended to transmit radio
signals

These days the difference gets blurred a bit; if a piece of computer
gear radiates a strong signal on 14.31818MHz, it's likely to *sound*
like QRM, but since the gear isn't intended to transmit radio signals,
is it actually QRN?

Does it really matter?

I use a TFT and i have very little QRN. It adds less than 1% of the
existing noise

MY only sources of noise a
1. the sat system . I have put a HDD of 80 GB. It adds a razor noise
apparent on 6-13 MHz stronger on 11 MHz and on my 16 m hor anternna
The 2x16 m antenna does not receive so much

2. two nearby grid towers . These towers are abt 30 m from our home.I
found strong noise of S9 on my 2x16 m across all bands and happens
mainly on summer periods. This year the noise changed freqs and was
apparent on 0-5.5 mHz but not all times ... The stronger was on the MW
band with S10
