Default ordered a PCR-1000 today

PCR1000 noise commnets:
I traded for a PCR1000withthe DSP module.
I wouldn't have spent ~$500 for it, but as part
of the trade it is a usefull radio. Not great, but
a radio with some clear uses.
PC noise can kill your efforts to receive
LEO WXSATS.
Use good quality coax.
A diskcone isn't the best, or even a good choice.
Consider a homebrew QDH instead.
Mount the antenna away from your PC.
Make sure you PC, monitor etc is WELL
groudned.
This means more then a 8' ground rod!
You can't have too amny Feritte RFI beads
on your coax, and all the lines into/out fo
your PC. Keyboard, network, modem, telephone
line, printer ect.
Use an isolation transformer between the
PCR1000 and your PC!!!!!! One with a internal
RF shield is prefreerd but the radio shack 10:10:
automotive transformer is much better then nothing.
You might consdier building an 8ohm:10K step
up islolation transformer. I used a rat shack 8ohm:1K,
the a 1100 ohm fixed resistor and a 10K pot feeding
a 10K:10K(with internal RF shield).
Bond all of your equipment with 1" braid to the best
ground you can get!!

If your PCR1000 has the DSP module it will run HOT.
I added self stick 1/2 rubber feet to allow air flow. It
really helped reduce drift.

Hiya, Terry

Thanx for all the info. I like the idea of the isolation transformer a lot.
I'm getting the idea that it may be absolutely necessary given what I have
heard thus far. I dont have the DSP module in it, but I may eventually
order one. I have the UT-106 in my R75 and I use it all the time.

I know the discone wont be a good antenna for weather sat images. I figure
I'd make a discone as a multi purpose hf antenna. It probably wont cut it
for weather sat, but I figured I'd give it a try. A quadrifilar helical
antenna would be good for that, but not so good as an all purpose antenna.
I'll probably make the discone for now and build a quadrifilar helix later
on. I'm also going to try out my two roof antennas with the PCR-1000 and
see if they do anything useful.

A "long" wore (in my case ~70') with a 9:1 matching transformer,
with an external attenuator (pull a 10dB, 20dB and 40dB design
from an older ARRL handbook or online, I had a link but it is now
dead. And a HF high pass, MW reject fitler and an FM BCB band
reject fitlers will do wonders for the PCR1000. Leave the DSP
module in your '75, it is a much better HF receiver then
the PCR1000 could even dream of being.
I view the PCR1000 as a glorified service monitor, and a task
specific scanner. I have made lists of frequencies for "special
events", T-storms, floods snow/ice storm, eathquake, nerve gas
leak(I live ~20 miles from a major nerve agent storag and disposal
site). I also have a list of HF frequencies for similar special events.

I have an older 40MHz laptop, with Win 95B, for such emergencies.
Before running any software be sure to backup the EProm. Even with
the Icom factory software Eprom corruption has been known to happen.

A crossed dipole over a set of crossed reflectors or metal screen
make a good begining WXSAT antenna. QDXis clearly the way to
go, a mast mounted JFET(or MOSFET) preamp will make that simple antenna
about 80% as good as a QDH.

Good luck

Terry

HF Discones are HUGE.- have you looked at the math?

Pardon..... I mean VHF/UHF discone. I already have two good outdoor
antennas for hf.

I have one and get no noise from my computer. It is a fine radio...

After thinking about it for about two years, I finally ordered a PCR-1000
today. I got it from Universal Radio for 499.95
This weekend, I plan on putting together a homebrew discone. One of the
things I'm excited about is that I'll finally get a chance to

receive/decode
weather satellite images now.

As I plan to use it as a base receiver, I'm still concerned with how it is
going to deal with noise coming off of my PC. I've read a few reviews

that
stated noise could be a problem. Has anyone here used one of them ???

I think the noise problems that some of the pc controlled radio owners have
has more to do with the computer/monitor than the radio. I have an rx320 and
have never had any problems but have heard others that have all kinds of
problems. The first monitor I used with it was a Samsung and I could put the
radio almost touching the monitor with no problems. The Gateway EV700 that
I'm using now causes a slight problem if I get any closer than about 6
inches to it. RM~
