Would you be interested in my recapped S-40B?

A one-owner set when I bought it. It was stored in a box from 1969-1996. I
went through it in 1996 and it has rarely been used since then. (Why do I
keep all this stuff?)

Phil,
Would a Lafayette HE-10 be about the equivalent of the S-40? Mine is
mint condition, along with my restored S-38. Your website is great!

That is interesting. Are both single conversion? I know that the
HE-10 has IF Gain control and ANL, it is pretty sensitive and
selective on the BCB.

They are both single conversion. I know the HE-10 has two
IF stages, and thus fairly good selectivity. I am not sure
if the S-40 has one or two IF stages... I suspect one.

The S-40 series has two IF and on RF stage. Single RF
receivers with 455khz IF's tend to have image problems on
the higher bands but that also depends on the selectivity of
the RF stage. Keep in mind that nearly all Hallicrafters
stuff was designed to be sold at relatively low prices. For
the most part the line has good features and outstanding
looks but not the best performance in the world. The point
is that someone could afford something by Hallicrafters when
other stuff was just too expensive.
I have somewhere in storage a military technical manual
on communication that shows performance graphs for the SX-28
and the Super-Pro, the differences in image and spurious
responses is astonishing. The Super-Pro is nearly free of
them, the SX-28 graphs look like corn fields. However, the
commercial version of the SX-28 was around $225 and the
Super Pro about double that.
