You might want to try a 1/2 antanna which does not require a ground

I want to mount a 2 meter rig on my Honda Foreman ATV. I want a
high-gain antenna, either a 5/8 wave or possibly a collinear. I would
like to stay around 4 to 5 feet in length, but it is possible that a
collinear would be longer.

Any recommendations on this ? I know that an atv would not provide
much
of a ground plane, so I think a 1/4 wave would be out of the question.

Any recommended "type" (wavelength, etc) and brand for this use ?

Thanks for any comments !!

You are going to need something rugged if you are out in the woods. I made a
J antenna from a couple of old CB SS whips many years ago. I drilled a block
of metal with 3 holes 2 on 1 side and 1 on the other to fit the threads on
the antennas. The 2 holes on one side got the 3/4 wl and the 1/4wl section
the hole on the other side mated with a big spring mount. I believe this was
modeled after the Super J as seen in the ARRL handbook. This antenna mounted
on a VW dune buggy survived contact with many overhanging branches. This
antenna got out a lot better than the 1/4wl antenna it replaced. I think
this was mostly due to its added hiegth rather than any significant increase
in gain.

Try Larsen antennas, their "OM" series of mobiles
1/2 wavelength, are end loaded-- Ideal for
fiberglass , and low amounts of metal. Works
great on Broncos, and Blazers, and other
non-metal frames! try

Which metre band is it for, and what are the meters used for?
