Thanks! -- Pete k1po -- Indialantic By-the-Sea, FL Hi, there are quite many choices between tiny hand-held units like Autek Research VA-1 vector analyzer and computer/laptop connected VNAs like N2PK VNA which gives more accurate measurements. This last one is basically a kit, but not too complicated to build at home and is quite multi-use device. Both have been useful and done their jobs well. Kari B |

This request from last year did not garner many specifics other than that
one should be aware of disturbances from other stations when using most available instruments. One mention of the AIM 4170 was made by K6MHE and the use of a GR bridge was mentioned by several including Walt. If might be interesting to several to learn what K1PO ended up using. While I have a GR bridge and the CIA hand held meter, I have found the AIM 4170 to be ideal. It ends up being used for several tasks and has not been disturbed by RF from others when connected to an antenna. Its ability to characterize a crystal is great - especially to someone who has done it the old way. This evening, I confirmed that one can use it to characterize a piece of coax for velocity, Zo, and (matched) loss. . . . and it is very easy to store the Z vs. frequency for latter comparison. . . Another data point. 73, Mac N8TT "Peter O. Brackett" wrote in message ...
