Default Differences between Hammarlund 170 and 180

Are there any significant differences between the Hammarlund 170 / 170A
and 180 / 180A besides the fact that the former is ham bands only and the
latter is general coverage?

There are manuals for the HQ-170, HQ-170A, and HQ-180
on the BAMA site and its mirror. The mirror is better
because the original site is limited to ten users at a time
and is sometimes hard to download from.

I think the HQ-170 is an HQ-110 plus the HC-10 tunable if. The HQ-180 came
out later and I suspect had overall improvements and may have been designed
more from the ground up.

The HQ-170 plays like a $200 radio with a great tunable if. The HQ-180
plays like a $400 radio.

But, these are just my opinion - totally subjective. Hope I do not hurt any
HQ-170 fans' feelings.

The HQ-180 has recently gone for $655 and as high as $1725 on
eBay...Hope it plays as good as that!

....just my two cents..

Well I have had my HQ-170 for a while now. I restored one that I
bought on Ebay for about $200 including shipping. A local ham had a
parts HQ-170A unit that I purchased from him. The HQ-170A has a flip
top cabinet that allows you to access the tubes and everything on top
of the chassis. I believe the HQ-170A has a solid state replacement
for the 5U4GB power supply rectifier tube. There are some other
differences in some of the connections on the rear panel. Seems like
you can pickup a HQ-170 for a decent price. The HQ-170A VHF models
command a pretty high price. The HQ-180's seem to be worth their
weight in gold as Bill noted in his message, I also saw the one on
Ebay go for $1700+ recently. The only recommendation I would have is
to expect to have to do a complete alignment to the receiver and
replace C82, the 4 section electrolytic. This alignment can be kinda
tricky and you will need to have an accurate 60 KHz signal generator
to get the 60 KHz IF's aligned correctly. I am real happy with my
HQ-170. I use it mainly on AM on 75 meters with my Johnson Ranger
transmitter. 73 de Randy, WB5KCM

Funny thing..... If I had one that nice, I don't think I'd sell it, even
for over $1k. If the sale is legit, I can only assume that the buyer
once had one and is willing to go to any end to replicate his/her early
station. And/Or... it could be one of several persons-of-means that are
in this hobby that price is never an obstacle.

All of them have been going for from $400 to $700 over the time that I
have been watching (last couple of months). Then we have ONE of them that
goes for $1700++? Doesn't that look a little suspicious to you guys?

On that one auction (270110127334), looks like bidder #3 wanted it
badly...bid a number of times, topping over his previous bids while no
one else even outbid him. Bidder number 5 may have been a shill but it
was already up to $1670 when #5 popped it only $30 more. Then #3 kept
increasing it higher over his previous bid. Nope...I think the seller
got real lucky on this one.

Everything is worth only what someone else is willing to pay for it.

The HQ-180 sold new for $429 in 1959. In today's dollars, that would
be $2,993. From that perspective, and the fact that the HQ-180 is a
desireable collectable, $1,725 seems like a bargain.

Unless bidder #3 was the shill, and had no idea what he was doing...

I would be amazed beyond belief if the sale actually goes through and the
radio actually changes hands at that price.
