hi, have here a valiant ii transmitter without the crystal dummy knob,
to cover the crystal holder, now in the hole someone put a 6,3 audio female audio plug, thas can easely removed, deeper a see a radio tube socket, seems to be original, question, how do you put the cristals in place, is there somthing to plugin in the tube socket, what parts most be present to work with the crystals, can you change crystals from the frontpanel hole labeled crystals thanks carlos |

You will have to look in the manual for the proper orientation. 73, Roger Hi, You can also use two type HC-17/U fundamental mode crystals in the octal socket. You should specify 32pF load capacitance when you order them. Most crystal suppliers no longer offer crystals in the old FT-243 holders. The type HC-17/U holder is the same as the modern, hermetic, HC-6/U holder, but has thicker pins to mate with the sockets that were used with FT-243 crystals. The crystals take the place of the VFO, whose output frequencies were multiplied to get to the higher bands. So if you want a crystal to operate on 14,200 , 21,300 or 28,400 you would plug in a 7,100 KHz crystal. The manual has the chart of which crystals to use for the desired band. 73, Ed Knobloch |

as i understand the octal tube socket is in fact the crystal holder, you can not have thick fingers to put crystals in place hi, 73 carlos |

Yes, the assumption is that you have very thin fingers to put the crystals
in. I found a surgeon's tool with rubber tips, that works ok. You can also put some masking tape on the crystals to make a little handle sticking out the tip. 73, Colin K7FM |

Wonder if I could wrap a masking tape handle around myself so that they could extract me from the dreaded middle seat after a 4 hour flight?!? -Bill |

there was surely a better way for swapping the crystals, wonder why they put the tube socket so deep, the solution with the dummy knob for covering the hole was not a bad idea, unfortunaty it came not with the radio, so finding one seems to be impossible, but who nows ................... |
