KIIS vs KFMB quality question

I'm in southwestern Riverside County -- Southern California -- and I
get both KIIS-FM (102.7, Top-40, Los Angeles) and KFMB-FM (100.7,
Hot-ish AC, San Diego).

My question, though, is this: While flipping between KFMB and KIIS
I've noticed on several occassions that the actual transmission from
KIIS sounds much clearer, livelier, richer... just plain better; KFMB
on the other hand and in comparison sounds... well, hold music was one
of my first thoughts. It's muddy, lacks real rande definition and
clarity and sounds like someone has their compressor wrenched up to 12
on a 1-10 scale.

Always sort of felt that KIIS was as close to AM sounding as one could
tolerate on FM. Grainy high end, very little dynamic range, muddy
bass.
There are several nice ousnding station on FM in So Cal strating with
KTWV 94.7 and KLON 88.1 (no I am not pushing jazz!!!!!)

[ Moderator's Note: Is 94.7 running "the Wave" format? "Smooth jazz" isn't
real jazz; for that you want to go to what you're calling KLON. Those must
be old calls, because 88.1 is KKJZ at Cal State Long Beach. Now THAT's jazz...
ok, I guess my biases are showing :P ]
