The ancients sacrificed each other to the "Gods" of the sky when they were angry (thunder, heavy storms)...same goes for the Gods of the sea, the four winds, etc. St. Elmo's Fire was attributed to the Gods by the old salts and still is in superstitious circles of the old time fishermen... Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.... It wasn't referred as magic. The more answers you learn, the more questions you discover. It's a never ending quest.
