[DXNL] DXNL 1532 (Aug 15, 2007)
DXNL 1532 - Aug 15, 2007 DX Newsletter a free and weekly service of DARC Committee "DX and HF contesting" (http://www.darcdxhf.de) editor: Helmut Schlaffer, DL7MAE (e-mail: ) translation by: Bob, DL7VOA (e-mail: ) A6 - UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Don,N1DG, is staying in the Emirates from Aug 15-18 and is QRV as A61AD mainly in RTTY and in CW. QSLs unfortunately only direct or via LotW. EA8 - CANARY ISLANDS, AF-004 Hans,EA8/ON6ZK, is hitting the airwaves from Teneriffa (AF-004) with only 25 watts mostly in SSB on 20m/17m from Aug 15-22. QSL via bureau preferred to ON6ZK. FG - GUADELOUPE, NA-102 David,F1JXQ, showed up as TO1USB (instead of FG/F1JXQ like announced in DXNL 1530) on 14.195 MHz from Guadeloupe (NA-102). QSL via F1JXQ. KH4 - MIDWAY ATOLL, OC-030 The Midway atoll is one of the most wanted DXCC entities (as seen from Europe). Its scarcity value increased over the past few years after Midway has been closed to the public in January 2002. Carolyn Bohan, the regional head of the "National Wildlife Refuge Pacific Region (US Fish and Wildlife Service)" gave her blessing to a visitor plan, which could come into effect in November 2007 or January 2008. This plan explicitly includes amateur radio activities but restrictions may apply to the antennas. They must be designed in a way not to harm any birds on Midway. OJ0 - MARKET REEF, EU-053 OH0RJ, OH2BH, OH2PM, SM0W and SM6U intended to land on Market Reef on Aug 11 and planned to show up as OJ0B (QSL via OH2BH) with two stations the same day. OJ0B is working in CW/SSB until Aug 16. --- They will be replaced by OH2HAN, OH2MZB and OH2LU as OJ0MI (via OH2HAN) who will be active mainly in RTTY. During the upcoming International Lighthouse Weekend (Aug 18/19) OJ0MI can be found between 14.250 and 14.260 MHz. They announced to be QRV on following frequencies: CW: 25 kHz from the lower band edge SSB: 3.790, 7.040, 14.190, 18.140, 21.290 MHz They will use brand new FT-2000 radios and SteppIR antennas. If you are collecting stamps you may want to request your QSL card enclosed with 7 EUR (or 10 US$) from the QSL manager and get a special stamp from Market Reef. Reports and several pictures from the earlier DXpedition OJ0B (2005) can be found at http://www.kolumbus.fi/oh2bn/pagemarket.htm OX - GREENLAND, NA-243 Johan,OX/PA3EXX/p, will activate the new IOTA island Rathbone (NA-243) from Aug 19-23. QSLs will be confirmed after his return direct or via bureau to PA3EXX. SV9 - CRETE, EU-015 Ghis,SV9/ON5NT, is going to spend his holidays on Crete (EU-015) from Aug 16-23. QSLs via his homecall. V5 - NAMIBIA Alfons,DJ8VC, will stay in Namibia from Aug 23 until Sep 8 and plans to become QRV as V5/DJ8VC working in CW/SSB on 10-160m. On Sep 1/2 he will join other OMs from Namibia as V55V/p in the IARU Region 1 SSB Fieldday Contest. He is using the shack of Martin,V51W, and can has the choice between wires, a rhombic and several yagi antennas. He also plans to take part in the WAE SSB Contest at the end of his operation (Sep 8/9). QSL cards for V5/DJ8VC and V55V/p (only for THIS Fieldday) will be confirmed by Alfons after his return home. VP9 - BERMUDA ISLANDS, NA-005 Seppo,VP9/OH1VR, announced to become QRV from Bermuda (NA-005) mainly in CW from Aug 19-21. QSLs via homecall. 7O - YEMEN Chris Lorek,G4HCL, has the written permission to work under supervision signing 7O/G4HCL on all bands during his business trip from Aug 13-15. You should listen on 14.170 and 14.260 MHz and it is very likely that most of the operation will take place only in SSB on 20m. Chris already notes that the papers he has may not be good enough for an approval by the DXCC Desk. QSLs only direct via G4HCL, PO Box 400, Eastleigh SO53 4ZF, England. 9X - RUANDA Peter Stabusch,DL8YA (ex 5Z4SP and 9H1FV), writes that official amateur radio licenses are issued again in Ruanda since July 12. He was lucky enough to get his former callsign 9X5SP which he got allocated before back in April 1967. Peter is working for the "Deutsche Welle" in Kigali and helps to build up the "Rwanda Amateur Radio Union" (RARU). He is using an Atlas 210X with a dipole for 20m. QSLs for 9X5SP via DL8YR. HUNGARY, SPECIAL EVENT STATION The 5th International Congress for the New Evangelisation which will take place in Budapest on Sep 15-22. The special event call HG5MISSION is activated until Sep 30. QSL via bureau. NEW PREFIXES FOR BOSNIA-HERCEGOVINA, E7 The ITU has allocated the prefix block E7A-E7Z to Bosnia-Hercegovina, but changing all the callsigns may last until the end of the year. Jahresende dauern, bis der Wechsel aller Rufzeichen abgeschlossen ist. PUBLISHING LOGS AND LOSING DXCC CREDIT... The magazine "CQ" published all logs of the last CQWW DX Contests at: http://www.cqww.com/cwlogs.htm and http://www.cqww.com/ssblogs.htm In the future DXers have to be aware that it is possible to lose DXCC credit for QSOs made during those contests. Rule 5 in section III of the DXCC rules writes that publishing logs "...creates a question as to the integrity of the claimed QSOs ... and may be considered sufficient reason to deny ARRL award credit for contacts with any station for which such presentations have been made." Falk,DK7YY, who is a field- checker of the ARRL sent a query to the DXCC Desk and the DXCC manager Bill Moore,NC1L, answered that he cannot make any statement questioning this rule. With other words: If a DXpedition submits its CQWW log, it can be assumed that its DXCC approval is denied as well. Country and band chasers will cease their contest participation and may focus on chasing the DX before and after the contest weekends! SILENT KEY: Dick Wolf,N6FF (ex KL7H), passed away on Aug 1 at the age of 68. He took part in many DXpeditions, was a passionate lowband DXer and QSL manager of many DX stations. Most of these logs have been uploaded to the LoTW. I had heard of danger to birds at a very powerful shortwave site using open wire balanced line, (a macabre story) but that just wouldn't happen in any setup likely to be used today. - 73 de Mike KB3EIA - |

(I hear our station's founder was an avid conservationist and was very concerned about these bird kills) Best information I have is that we don't know *what* the danger is, but we do know that it exists. That said, we're talking about much larger towers than would ever be involved in a ham DXpedition! I suppose there's a risk to small rodents (mice, squirrels, etc.) because the tower makes an excellent perch for birds-of-prey! Seriously, I suspect the concern isn't as much that the antennas themselves will harm wildlife, as that amateurs will disturb habitat as they erect those antennas. |
