PEAK of the QUADRANTIDS 2009 (Review: http://www.mmmonvhf.de/ms.php)
Probably most of you was QRV last weekend and has noticed the strong
Meteor Scatter activity related to 2009 Quadrantids Shower.
Very high meteor rates (ZHR up to 150 hr-1 at peak) have been observed,
with spectacular reflections all over the peak day (Saturday Jan 3rd).
Shower maxima has been broader than usual this year. According to IMO
Live, measured ZHR has remained over 100 hr-1 level between 05 and
18 UT on Jan. 3rd, while ZHR has remained over 40 hr-1 the whole day!
Such a maxima is significantly wider than typical Quadrantids activity
shape. Peak time predictions have been fully confirmed by observations.
European MS enthusiasts have been favoured this year, since during peak
time (around 13 UT) the shower's Radiant elevation over EU was optimal
for radio contacts (around 45 degs), thus leading to very favourable
path geometry. That's an excellent way of starting 2009 radio season,
but now we have to wait until April/May for the next good meteor shower.
Anyway, apart sporadic meteors, some minor showers will appear before
that, and our Team will keep you informed about them...
