The End is Near...
I've been using usenet for about 15 years with various names. I just read
the announcement from AT&T that they are ending usenet services very soon. That sucks. But so does growing old in general. Still, quite often it beats the alternative. To all of those that I have chatted with over the years and whom I may never chat again, thanks. It's been fun. Ed Cregger |

Ed Cregger www.dslextreme.com This is a trend in ISPs. For the past year I've used a free service called Tera News after my ISP cut this access. The ISPs for the most part didn't actually run the service but contracted with a service such as Giganews. It is possible to get access through Giganews as and individual, but they do have fees. The free service has some daily limits but I've never exceeded the daily limit for text based things. If you are into binaries in a big way, they do offer paid services with greater downloading quantities. There are several of these services. Because of the Spam content on many groups, Usenet popularity is down. Many groups have gone to moderated services on things like Yahoo groups where they is a little more control (sometimes) on the kook factor; or, they have private websites actually owned by a participating member and often moderated by them. Ed Cregger I use this: http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php $2.95 per month gets 12G download per month... that is a lot of data! It is less expensive than a magazine subscription |

I sense that you don't know an awful lot about usenet -- since you've multi-posted this in gawd knows how many ng's. Your ISP is merely a _connection_ to the internet (and all it's protocols.) Any "services" it provides beyond that are just 'teasers' to get folks to sign up. Sadly, as with so many things America, they are dumbing down the services they provide to cater to the klewless. You have total freedom to avail yourself of _ALL_ the internet has to offer once you're connected. I use www.individual.net/ for usenet -- have done so for over 10 years and through 3 different ISP's. WFM. I use virtually _nothing_ of my ISP's services -- not DNS, not email, not usenet... Once connected to the internet I have *the entire world* across which to locate free or reasonably priced services. |

Use your web browser and go to; http://groups.google.com I think yahoo has usenet access, too. Also use google (or any search engine) and search on "newsgroups access" You can purchase subscriptions to unix shell accounts at many ISPs and learn a bit of unix, and use a unix email-newgroup client (there are many, but PINE is very easy to learn), and you also beat all the email carried viruses, too, because you read your email in a unix environment from your windows computer (or mac) by opening a telnet window. You can get an almost free shell account at: http://freeshell.org or //sdf.lonestar.org but you have to learn a few things, too, and pay one buck activation fee and he likes a lifetime membership fee of $36 for full priviledges. www.mv.com and www.panix.com also have unix shell accounts with full unix NG access, and the usual clients. |

Thanks to you and everyone else that answered. I don't know what I was thinking when I made the original post. Musta been a senior moment, but with all of the information that has been posted, I'll still be on the newsgroups. 73 everyone. Ed, AJ4PJ |
