Last time I was on the low bands was with a HT-40 + HQ-110 or TR4 - If I wanted to look for a small used inexpensive low band rig that could be used at home, in the car, or with AC/12V power on Boy Scout campouts any suggestions...... But most transistorized rigs do require a resonant antenna. For your "hunk of wire" look at the MFJ antenna tuners, or for automatic antenna tuning, the tuners from LDG or SGC.
