Here is some "hep"
Palomar Electronics Corporation was a manufacturer of CB linear amplifiers in the 1960's and 1970's that used sweep tubes (now expensive) or bipolar RF transistors. http://www.cbtricks.com/Amp/palomar/index.htm These units were illegal for usage on CB (27 MHz/11 meters) ... and NOT designed for the amateur radio service (10 meters). They sold hundreds of thousands of these units -- most are in garages, basements or tossed in junk with 8-track tape units. http://www.cbtricks.com/Amp/palomar/...bile/index.htm The company went out of business around 1980. Since that time many builders and manufacturers in southwest USA and Mexico completely copied the earlier Palomar design and sold these through truck stops and other CB merchants. http://www.palomar-engineers.com/Palomar/palomar.html If you are just starting out in Ham radio, its not a good place to start. Here is a link to a photo of the Palomar 200 mobile: http://www.cbtricks.com/Amp/palomar/...bile/index.htm http://www.cbtricks.com/Amp/palomar/...tour/index.htm John "bakert" wrote in message ... A warning about these things...
A few years ago, a local ham bought a tube CB amp from an estate sale, thinking he could use it on 10 meters. He asked me to check it out before putting it on the air. Being a paranoid type, even though the thing hadn't been plugged in for about two weeks, I kept my fingers away from the tubes & measured the voltage on the plate caps before doing anything else. **400 VOLTS**. (I think I got as much of a shock from reading the voltmeter as I would have if I'd touched the HV circuit!) After discharging things, I traced the wiring. And was not at all surprised to find there was NO BLEEDER. Nothing to discharge the HV after switchoff. Obviously the filter capacitors were in good shape though! In other words, these things are physically dangerous. (I would imagine the signal quality wouldn't be very good either...) -- Doug Smith W9WI Pleasant View, TN EM66 |
