Kenwood TS-480sat Antenna Tuner Query
Hi,
I am looking at purchasing one of these radio. I would like to use it in the car and I am wondering what the lowest frequency I can tune into on a mobile antenna. I wouldn't want to go to much bigger than a 7-9 foot whip. Also, is there any radio which will tune below 7mhz on a 7-9ft (or smaller) whip? I know Codan make an antenna tuner that will do it. Thanks, Dom |

Thanks, Dom Use a screwdriver antenna with a Turbo-Tuner...then you can use the 'HX instead of the 'SAT. That extra 100 watts comes in real handy especially in the mobile. Talk to the folks at Tarheel antennas.... they did right by me. 73 -n6ojn |

Dom- My TS-480SAT can tune the 40 Meter phone band, but only 1/2 to 2/3 of the 75 Meter phone band using the appropriate Hustler resonator and mast. You are asking too much of a built-in tuner. The specs of built-in tuners usally say the antenna must have an SWR of 3:1 maximum. Because of component values, they may match a wider range on the higher bands, but not on 75 and 40 Meters. To do what you want, you should consider N6OJN's suggestion, or look at one of the separate tuners that companies like Kenwood and Icom have for their respective equipment. MFJ, LDG and SGC also make external auto tuners. 73, Fred, K4DII |

Kenwood TS-480sat Antenna Tuner Query
I have a TS-450S (no tuner) and and SGC SG-237 Smartuner. The SGC needs
only 8 feet of antenna down to 3.5MHz. I used this setup in my camper, and it did OK. If you're interested, both are currently up for auction on eBay. Sold the camper, and not interested in mobile operation. Rick WØYGH |

Kenwood TS-480sat Antenna Tuner Query
Hi.
Thanks Rick for the offer. I will need to tune as low as 2.020Mhz which is 1 of the emergency frequencies on the system I am using. The antenna needs to be very robust as it will be used on a 4WD. Codan and Barrett specialise in this area but it's hard to find just the A/T antenna! I'll do some research into the screwdriver antennas and turbo tuner. MoonRaker does a great antenna. Here is a link for those interested in a 2-30Mhz auto tune antenna which is less than 9Ft tall!!! http://www.moonraker.com.au/ftp/at230.pdf Thanks, Dom |
