"Caveat Lector" wrote in message news:qoE1e.1259$k57.360@fed1read07... Well sir in Southern California, in the last year or so, we have trained about 30 school kids who obtained their license. Donations have been made to set up complete Ham stations at the schools. In our repeater club there are well over 75 members age 25 and below. At our field day, we had two troops of boy scouts who got on the radio. Several went on to get a license. Ditto for the JOTA day (if you know what that is) The kids loved PSK31 - no internet they asked. How many youths have you trained ??? Well sir when theSAN DIEGO COUNTY was ON FI CEDAR FIRE LARGEST IN STATE HISTORY 16 dead, 2,342 single family dwellings & 383,657 acres burned I repeat 16 dead, 2,342 single family dwellings & 383,657 acres burned It was a disaster of unimagined proportions. I can assure you that Amateur Radio was quite relevant -- to the tune of over 500 Amateurs participating. Won accolades from local officials and the media. Are you a member of ARES or RACES ? Are you prepared for the BIG one that will surely come your way? Well are you? When the cell phones are out, telephone lines are toast, power is lost, you will wish you had a battery operated mountain top repeater. Ours was on battery power or portable generator power for 3 days after the commercial power was lost. Do you support such a repeater, are you even a Ham? Support Amateur Radio or rely on your silly phone - the choice is yours. You need to do some research before you blather out this stereotype nonsense. -- CL -- I doubt, therefore I might be ! Ham radio has been irrelevant for years, hams just have not realized it yet, and probably never will. "How come the young kids aren't coming into ham radio anymore."? duhhhhhhhh, anyone hear about Advanced Technology? 73, Rabbi Phil How can any ham sign 73, after writing all this anti-ham BS There is a "Psychiatrist-To-Hams who sometimes visits here. CL Probably when he found out he couldn't muster what it took to pass an exam! I've seen quite a few of them. The "hand it to me" types. Afraid to put forth a little effort in life. I knew a lady once who bombed a test like 3 times, blamed everyone but herself. It wasn't our fault she didn't study or was too slow to be able to comprehend the material. cl |
Boy has this turned into a rats nest of smart answers. I use an Autek QF-1A
filter cranked in real tight and the SSB is so well cleaned up I still can copy most CW signals through it. I'm sure that the newer DSP rigs do a much better job but are out of my price reach. Good luck and may CW live forever. 73, Ken "GeorgeF" wrote in message k.net... How are the rest of the CW operators dealing with all the SSB that is showing up in the 40 meter CW portion of the band? Here it is the weekend and there's some contest going on and there is more SSB in the CW portion of the band then there is SSB in the SSB portion of the band. What gives with this? On HF I'm a 99% CW operator, only been licensed about a year and love CW, don't care much for SSB. But I'm starting to wonder why I paid $1800 for a Yaesu FT-1000Mk V Field as it looks like I won't be able to use it for what I bought it for this weekend... Help George |
DSP would do a poor job of cleaning out SSB signals for CW copy. You would
do bunches better with using your Autek as you are doing. Dan/W4NTI "Photoman" wrote in message ... Boy has this turned into a rats nest of smart answers. "Dan/W4NTI" wrote DSP would do a poor job of cleaning out SSB signals for CW copy. Actually, Dan, the DSP engine in my IC775 blows the Autek away. Stagger-tune the twin PBT to attenuate the crud, turn on the APF, and then gently fondle the RIT. Since you're doing all of this up inside the IF chain, you make your peace with the AGC-pump syndrome, a tack impossible with the Autek. 73, de Hans, K0HB |
