Default GB2RS NEWS Sunday 19 August 2007

1 GB2RS NEWS Sunday 19 August

The news headlines

* Ultra Wide Band becomes legal in UK

* New 6m GB2RS service

* Beware fraudulent adverts On Monday 13 August Ofcom made it legal to
use approved ultra wide band equipment without a licence. Ultra wide
band technology allows very fast wireless data transfer over short
distances. It works by using very large chunks of spectrum at once.
Approved equipment will operate between 3.1GHz and 10.6GHz. During
consultations the RSGB expressed concerns that there may be mutual
interference with several amateur microwave bands. Supporters of the
technology say that the ultra wide band transmissions are of such low
spectral density that interference to other services is unlikely. The
full text of the statement can be found on the Ofcom web site.

A new GB2RS news reading will be starting up later this month on 6m in
West Yorkshire. Readings will be on 51.53MHz FM in the Dewsbury and
Wakefield areas. The two newsreaders appointed are Dave, G4CLI, and
Robin, G1MHU. They will be reading the news each Sunday at 1100 local
time. Listeners are invited to listen out for them and to call in after
the news reading with reception reports.

Listeners are urged to be cautious when responding to printed
advertisements for radio equipment. A fraudster has recently been
advertising items from addresses in Oxford and the Isle of Wight. The
items are generally described as 'silent key' or 'per pro' sales.
Would-be purchasers have sent money and not received goods. The RSGB
understands that police in Hampshire, Oxfordshire and the Irish
Republic are currently investigating.

The Irish Radio Transmitters Society says is getting close to tracing
the 10m religious broadcasts reported recently on GB2RS. The location
has been narrowed down to somewhere on the northern side of the city of
Dublin. Further work is still required to locate the actual
transmitter. Transmissions have been noted on 28.105MHz FM at 10am
local time on weekdays. Additional transmissions occur at 9am and 11am
on Sundays.

A series of amateur radio licence courses will be starting shortly in
Bath. Steve Hartley, G0FUW, and Mike Coombs, G3VTO, commence classes on
20 September. Classes run from 7 to 9pm every Thursday. The series
begins with the Foundation level exam in November, Intermediate in
February and the Advanced exam in July. Courses are open to anyone.
There is no obligation to progress through all three levels one after
the other. For more information contact Steve Hartley on 01225 464394,
weekday evenings, or by email to .

The results of the RSGB 80m Club Championship 2007 have now been
published on
www.contesting.co.uk. The Bristol Contest Group took first
place.

2 A reminder to any listeners wishing to operate HF in Greece under
reciprocal arrangements. Greek regulations still require amateurs to
prove proficiency in Morse before being permitted to operate below
30MHz. Further information can be found on the internet at
www.raag.org/licensing_en.html.

Now a message from the Isle of Man Amateur Radio Society. In the light
of the current Foot and Mouth Disease problems, precautionary
restrictions on rambling have been put in place on the Isle of Man.
This means that it is currently not possible to access or activate any
summits for the Summits On The Air programme. For more information
please contact John, GD0NFN, by email to .

the WARC bands. QSL via home call. Now the contest news The SARTG RTTY
takes place until 19 August at various times on RTTY mode, on the 3.5
to 28MHz bands. The exchange takes the form of RST and serial number.
The RSGB 70MHz Trophy Contest takes place on 19 August between 0900 and
1500 on all modes. The exchange takes the form of RST, serial number,
locator and postal district. The RSGB 1.3GHz to 2.3GHz activity evening
takes place on 21 August between 2000 to 2230 hours on all modes. The
exchange takes the form of RST, serial number and locator. The YO DX
Contest takes place from 1200 on 25 August until 1200 on 26 August, on
CW and SSB on the 3.5 to 28MHz bands. The exchange takes the form of
RST and serial number. Now the solar factual data for the period from 6
August to 12 August, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS On the 6th, solar
activity was low when several small C class solar flares took place,
otherwise, solar activity was very low with no solar flares taking
place. No effects were detected from the C class flares. Solar flux
levels declined slightly from 70 units on the 6th to 67. The average
was 68 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 12th was 72 units,
that's the same level as last week. X-ray flux levels remained below
the minimum A1 level. Two effects from recurring coronal holes took
place. The first was on the 7th with an Ap index of 23 units. The
second occurred on the 10th and the 11th with an Ap of 13 and 12 units
respectively. The average was Ap 11 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar
wind speeds increase from 290 kilometres per second on the 6th to 730
by the next day. Speeds gradually declined but on the arrival of the
second coronal hole disturbance increased to 590 kilometres per second.
Particle densities increased to 28 particles per cubic centimetre on
the 6th and to 25 particles per cubic centimetre on thee 10th. Bz
varied between minus 14 and plus 11 nanoTeslas during the disturbances
and between minus and plus 3 nanoTeslas on the quiet days. HF
propagation has mostly been rather flat, although there was again good
14MHz propagation to the Pacific for early risers. Sporadic-E continued
daily on 28 and 50MHz, and there were also occasional openings on
70MHz. VHF aurora was reported early on the 7th and during the
afternoon and evening of the 10th but only at high latitudes. And
finally the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun will be
rotating out of view. However, solar activity should still continue at
very low levels. Solar flux levels are expected to show a slight rise
during the coming week and by next weekend should be in the low 70's.
Geomagnetic activity is expected to be mostly quiet with just a slight

4 chance that activity could increase slightly towards next weekend.
MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 18MHz
for the south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are
expected to be about 10MHz. Paths this week to Japan should have a
maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around
18MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate
will be about 14MHz. The best time to try this path will be between
0900 and 1400 hours UTC. Sporadic-E is still expected to take place as
we move towards the end of the summer season. Openings on 144MHz are
not expected now.

And that's all for this week from the propagation team.
