Sealing the compartments at the top would have involved all sorts of problems.
For example - what would you do for air intakes?
Are you kidding?? It's called ventilation piping and has been around
since long before the Titanic was designed. ALL compartment areas in
carriers which are below the hanger deck are completely sealable, air
conditioned, heated and humidity-controlled by marine HVAC systems for
instance. Have you *ever* been on a ship??
Look up a ship called the "Great Eastern" for an interesting view of what could
be done.
