A benefactor is the O-6 or preferably an O-7+ who puts on your
performance report, "Definitely Promote."

Sheesh...All I needed to do to get promoted was to do my job as
directed.

We either did our jobs and got promoted, or we didn't.

No "benefactor" needed.
